What is new here?

We are hoping to go live in the next few days, so at present you are still looking at the trial version of the web site. Some information is starting to pop up in some areas and more will be added in the next few weeks.

Key information that will be here when we go live:

  • MSD OSCAR funding information and all the relevant links
  • Basic information on getting started as an OSCAR service
  • Regional information - initially from Waikato, Wellington, Top of the South, Christchurch and Auckland with more areas to come on board over the next few months

What can I find here?

This web-site is primarily aimed at enabling and facilitating communication and collaboration between OSCAR service providers and providing a one-stop shop for important sector information. If you are involved in running an OSCAR service this is the place to look for essential information and news from within the sector.

If you are a parent looking for information about OSCAR you might want to have a look at the parents section in the contacts page.

Some of the things you might want to do while here:

  • Look at news and notices from your region
  • Make contact with other providers in your region
  • Get up-to-date with policy announcements and sector news
  • Ask a question about getting a programme started, CYF Approval, employment processes, children's behaviour
  • Get ideas for activities and tips about running your programme

What is OSCAR?

"OSCAR" stands for Out of School Care and Recreation. OSCAR services are before/after school and school holiday programmes for school-aged children, usually up to the age of 13 years. Not all these services call themselves "OSCAR" but they have common features such as a focus on play and recreation (rather than schooling), operating outside of school hours and in holiday times, and providing care while parents do other things - work, training or taking time for their own activities.

These programmes are run by all kinds of small and large organisations - community groups, private businesses, franchises, local government, marae, schools, churches, early childhood centres and so on.  If you wish to locate a programme in your area, please use the link on the contacts page.

You may also come across the terms "OSCAR Approved" or "OSCAR Registered". At present there is no "governing body" for OSCAR services. The OSCAR Foundation was providing support for OSCAR services on a national basis but this organisation ceased operating in April 2012. "OSCAR Approved" usually refers to a programme being "approved" under the "OSCAR Standards for Approval" which are currently administered by Department of Child, Youth and Family. Read more about OSCAR Approval here.
